Five facts turn a range into a number: the village, the driveway’s length and surface, what else needs clearing, whether the road is public or private, and whether the house is on a well.

Which village, and which road. A house on Cuba Road may be plowed by Barrington Hills, Cuba Township or Lake County depending on the stretch. The operator needs to know what the public plow will do before pricing what the private one will.
How long the driveway is, and what it is made of. A 60-foot asphalt drive in Barrington village and a 400-foot paver approach with a gate in Barrington Hills are not the same job at any price. South Barrington bans gravel; Inverness allows crushed stone; a paver edge needs staking before the ground freezes.
Whether the road is private. Wynstone, Lake Barrington Shores, the private lanes in Barrington Hills, Hidden Lakes and The Woods in South Barrington. No public plow comes, and the association’s contractor may not do driveways.
Well and septic. Most homes outside Barrington village are on both. Say where the wellhead and the field are, so salt and piled snow stay away from them.
What else is out there. A walk to the side door, a barn lane, a paddock gate, a service walk to the trash enclosure, the mailbox post, the culvert ends. Everything named in October is cheaper than everything discovered in January.
